La Casa – Terrace Mountain Wildfire Risk Reduction Project Commencement

The Okanagan Shuswap Natural Resource District has developed a Fuel Management Prescription for a Wildfire Risk Reduction project in the Terrace Mountain Area. The intent of this Fuel Management Project is to reduce the threat of wildfire in the immediate Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) of the La Casa community. Treatments have commenced on site and will include, understory thinning, pruning, and pile burning throughout the spring of 2022. The attached letter describes this process, and the map and google earth file show the location of the project area.

Re: Crown Land Wildfire Risk Reduction Project

The Okanagan Shuswap Natural Resource District has initiated the development of a Fuel Management project in the Terrace Mountain area. The intent of this project is to improve forest stand wildfire resiliency by reducing forest fuel loading within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) of Westside road, in proximity to the community of La Casa. Treatment will maintain access and modify fire behaviour adjacent to values at risk, improving the safety and effectiveness of wildfire response along this portion of Wildland Urban Interface.

The treatment will range from hand and mechanical thinning, manual pruning, and surface fuel removal including pile and burn, designed to open the existing stand to prevent the initiation and spread of crown fires. The primary objective of the project is wildfire risk reduction, there will be no merchantable overstory removal.

Treatments have now commenced in the Terrace Mountain project area as of February 7th 2022.
